A Safer Alternative that is free of aluminium salts
Scientists at Reading Universityhave published a research
that points to the possible link between the use of anti-perspirants containing
aluminium and the rising rates of breast cancer. Over the past 25 years, cases
of breast cancer in Britain have doubled from about 20,000 per year in the late
1970s to almost 40,000 per year.
“Cases of breast cancer in Britain have doubled to about
40,000 per year”
One theory behind this possible link is that the majority of
anti-perspirants contain chemicals such as zirconium and aluminium that are
absorbed through the hair follicles in the skin where they react with water and
cause swelling. Researchers had originally thought that blocking perspiration
could lead to a build up of toxins in the lympth nodes in the armpit and over
the years contribute to chnages near the breast. Researchers now think there
may be another way in which anti-perspirants may increase the cancer risk. In
recent laboratory tests, aluminium and zirconium have been found to enter the
cells and cause mutations in DNA that could lead to cancerous growth and may
also disrupt hormone levels.
- Is there a link?
Underarm anti-perspirants may contribute to the risk of
breast cancer because they contain aluminium salts with metal ions that mimic
the effect of oestrogen. “Since oestrogen is known to be involved in the
development of human breast cancer, any components in the environment that have
oestrogennic activity and which can enter the human breast could theoretically
influence women’s risk of breast cancer”, says author of the review, Dr
Phillippa Daibre, who works in the School of Biological Sciences at the
University of Reading.
